What is Cholera?

Cholera is a bacterial infection that can cause sudden, severe diarrhoea and dehydration. While it is not present in the UK, it can be a risk in areas of Africa, Asia, and regions without reliable access to clean water or sanitation. The infection spreads through: 
  • Drinking contaminated water
  • Eating food that has been in unclean water (especially shellfish)
  • Consuming food prepared by someone carrying the infection

Although the risk for most travellers is low, awareness and protection are important.

Symptoms of Cholera

Cholera symptoms usually appear within a few days of exposure and may include: 

  • Severe watery diarrhoea 
  • Nausea and vomiting 
  • Stomach cramps 
  • Signs of dehydration (thirst, dry mouth, dark urine) 

If you have recently travelled to a cholera-affected area and develop these symptoms, seek urgent medical attention. 

How to Prevent Cholera While Travelling

Practising good hygiene and food safety plays a major role in cholera prevention. To reduce your risk, remember to:

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and clean water. 
  • Drink only bottled or boiled water. 
  • Use bottled or boiled water when brushing your teeth. 
  • Avoid ice, raw seafood, and shellfish. 
  • Eat fruit and vegetables only if you peel and wash them yourself. 

Cholera Vaccination for Travel

For additional protection, especially in high-risk areas, the cholera vaccination is recommended. You may need a private cholera vaccine if you are:

  • Travelling to areas where cholera is common, particularly if medical facilities are limited 
  • Working in aid, disaster relief, or humanitarian roles in outbreak regions 

The vaccine is given as an oral drink. Adults require two doses taken 1–6 weeks apart, with protection lasting up to two years. Both doses should be completed at least one week before departure.
