Common travel destinations & what's needed

Vaccination requirements vary by destination. Here are some of the most common
regions our patients travel to, and the vaccines typically recommended.

India

Typhoid
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis B

One of the most commonly visited destinations from the UK. Typhoid and Hepatitis A are strongly recommended for all travellers, including those visiting family.

South East Asia

Typhoid
Hepatitis A

Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Bali and surrounding countries. Typhoid risk is present, particularly in rural areas and when eating street food.

Sub-Saharan Africa

Typhoid
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis B

East and West Africa carry significant typhoid and hepatitis risk, particularly outside major cities. Often combined with Yellow Fever and malaria prevention.

Understanding the vaccines

Typhoid, Hepatitis A & Hepatitis B — what's the difference?

These three vaccines protect against distinct diseases. Some travellers need all three; others need one or two. Your pharmacist will advise on what’s appropriate for your specific trip.

Typhoid

Ideally 2+ weeks before travel

Typhoid fever is a serious bacterial infection spread through contaminated food and water. It is common in parts of South Asia and Africa where sanitation may be limited.

Available as a single injection or a 3-capsule oral course. Protection lasts approximately 3 years (injection) or 1–3 years (oral).

Hepatitis A

Single dose, ideally 2+ weeks before

Hepatitis A is a viral liver infection spread through contaminated food and water. It is recommended for most international travel outside Northern and Western Europe, North America and Australia.

A single dose provides protection for up to 1 year. A booster given 6–12 months later extends protection to 25+ years.

Hepatitis B

Course starts 4+ weeks before travel

Hepatitis B is spread through blood and bodily fluids. Recommended for travellers at higher risk — including those receiving medical treatment abroad, or travelling for extended periods to high-prevalence areas.

Standard course: 3 doses over 6 months. Accelerated course available for last-minute travel. Often combined with Hep A as a single vaccine (Twinrix).

Combined consultation

All assessed in a single appointment

If you need more than one vaccine, our pharmacist can administer multiple vaccines in the same appointment, assess your full travel health needs, and advise on any additional precautions for your destination.

Bring your travel itinerary and travel dates to your appointment for the most accurate advice.

When to Book

How far in advance do you need to book?

Timing matters — some vaccines need time to take effect before you travel.

2+ weeks

Ideal lead time

Booking 2 or more weeks before travel allows vaccines to take full effect and gives time for a booster if needed.

Last minute?

Still worth booking

Even a few days before travel is better than no protection. Some vaccines provide partial cover quickly. Contact us and we’ll advise.

Hepatitis B

Accelerated course

If you need a full Hepatitis B course, an accelerated schedule is available. Speak to our pharmacist about your travel dates.
