Pneumonia Vaccine: Who Needs It, When to Have It, and How to Book Privately

Perhaps you have recently turned 65 and your GP surgery has mentioned the pneumonia vaccine. Or maybe a chest infection last winter left you feeling wiped out for weeks, and you would rather not go through that again. Either way, wondering whether you need this jab is a perfectly sensible question.
The reassuring part is that the pneumonia vaccine is quick to have, and for many adults it is a single appointment rather than an ongoing commitment. Whether you qualify on the NHS or simply want to discuss private vaccination, getting it done can be simpler than you might expect.
What Does the Pneumonia Vaccine Protect Against?
It protects against pneumococcal bacteria, which can cause serious illnesses including pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis. This is why the vaccine is officially called the pneumococcal vaccine.
It does not cover pneumonia caused by viruses, so your yearly flu vaccine still plays an important part in protecting against flu and its complications.
What About Pneumovax in the UK?
Pneumovax 23 was used in the NHS adult programme for many years. During 2026, it is being replaced by a newer vaccine called PCV20, also known as Prevenar 20. Existing Pneumovax 23 stocks can still be used until they run out. Your pharmacist will confirm which vaccine is suitable for you and record your vaccination appropriately. NHS guidance on the pneumococcal vaccine provides further information.
Who Needs the Pneumonia Vaccine?
Pneumococcal vaccination in the UK is recommended for everyone aged 65 and over, and for younger people with certain health conditions. The NHS offers it free if you have:
- long term heart, lung, kidney or liver disease
- diabetes
- a weakened immune system or no spleen
- a cochlear implant
Some occupations, such as welding, also raise the risk. If you are not eligible on the NHS, you can still choose a private pneumonia jab through our pneumonia vaccine service following a pharmacist consultation.
When Should You Have the Pneumococcal Vaccine?
You can have it at any time of year, although many people choose autumn so it fits in with their winter vaccines. Your pharmacist can advise whether it can be given at the same visit as other vaccines you are due, such as flu or the RSV vaccine.
Most adults only ever need one dose. People with no spleen or chronic kidney disease may be advised to have a booster every five years.
Is the Pneumonia Vaccine Safe?
Yes, it is a well established vaccine and side effects are usually mild. You may notice a sore arm, slight swelling or a raised temperature for a day or two.
A practical tip from our pharmacists: wear a loose or short sleeved top, and keep your arm gently moving afterwards to ease any stiffness. Always mention if you have reacted to a vaccine before.
How Much Does a Private Pneumonia Vaccine Cost?
The pneumonia vaccine cost depends on which vaccine is used, and you can see current fees on our price list.
